What is the difference between Permanent Makeup and tattooing?
Permanent Makeup is a cosmetic procedure of tattooing makeup into the upper layers of skin called the epidermis. These outer layers of skin are constantly shedding and renewing. The process of cell turnover makes the color fade in time.
The tattoo process deposits pigment into the deeper layers of skin called the dermis. The cells of the dermis are far more stable than the cells of the epidermis, so the ink will stay in place with minor fading and dispersion.

Are Permanent Makeup procedures painful?
The sensation of every person is different and everyone has different levels of pain tolerance. However, most clients are completely comfortable and relaxed during their appointment.
Because Permanent Makeup is performed on sensitive areas of the body, anesthetic cream is used. We use a cream containing a combination of betacain, lidocaine and tetracain. Once the skin is broken another topical containing epinephrine is used to reduce fluid and swelling. This multiple application technique works well in keeping our clients comfortable during the duration of their treatment.
You may choose to take Tylenol prior to your appointment, but do not take Aspirin.
Specific procedure info:
Eyebrows - Clients have compared the sensation to tweezing or threading. Most clients feel this procedure is extremely comfortable with some even falling asleep.
Lips - Expect either no pain or up to mild stinging or pinching sensations. Mild to moderate swelling and tenderness will subside after the procedure is over. Numbing creams are applied before and during the procedure as well as soothing balms.
Lash Line - Expect stinging or pinching sensations.
Your comfort is a top priority at Deena Cosmetics. If you need additional information or additional help, please let us know. We make every effort to ensure our clients are comfortable as we help them to look their best!
How will it look?
Deena and her staff will apply their robust knowledge to achieve extraordinary results with little to no trauma to the skin, creating the most natural looking healed results.
Immediately after the procedure some weeping may occur and the color will appear darker than the healed result. During the procedure the pigment is mixed with body fluids and oxidizes. The color will stay dark for 4-7 days during the healing process, as the upper layers of epidermis are shed and replaced with new cells. After the healing process you will see a lighter softer color. The final color will appear around 4 weeks after the procedure and is usually 30-50 % lighter.
How long does it stay? Why does color fade?
The best possible color results can stay for years. Generally, 2-5 years is common. Individual result will vary.
Many factors influence increased fading of pigment. Skin tone, lifestyle choices, environmental impacts, procedures (chemical peels), sun exposure, certain medications and other individual factors all contribute to each person's Permanent Makeup longevity.
Also, the amount of pigment deposited under the skin can affect the length of time Permanent Makeup looks best. Very natural applications are likely to require a touch up sooner than a bolder application. Darker pigments tend to last longer.
Clients' skin type plays the biggest role in longevity and the general outcome of the procedure. Oily skin types tend to have a softer healed appearance for certain procedures, where those with drier skin may heal more crisp and defined.
Proper UVA/UVB protection will prevent color from fading as quickly when in sunny climates. Aggressive skin treatments will have an adverse effect on longevity.
Be sure to explain as much as you are able during your consultation so all factors are considered when we make recommendations to give you the best possible results!
Here are general guidelines for expected outcomes:
Eyeliner - 1-5 years
Lips - 1-2 years for softer results and 3-4 years for lipstick effect.
Eyebrows - 1-3 years
Is a touch up needed?
During the healing process the skin is working on repairing itself. The lymphatic system is trying to push all external particles out to prevent contamination. That explains why the color implanted the first time is not perfect after healing. The first appointment and procedure is like a sketch for the technician. All skin heals and holds pigment differently. At the follow up appointment (6-8 weeks), the technician reviews her work and adds the finishing touches. Permanent makeup is always a 2 or more step process which will be discussed during your consultation.
How long does it take?
The most important part of the procedure is drawing and designing the shape of the treatment area, which is done stencil free to ensure the most natural result according to your personal facial features. After the sketch is created, we will have you look at the plan to make sure you approve! This part of the procedure could take 15-30 minutes.
Anesthesia will take 20 minutes, and the procedure itself 1-2 hours. Total time 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Duration of the follow up procedure is about 1.5 hours for eyebrows and about 2 hours for lips.
Appointments are booked in blocks of 1-2 hours to allow for thorough consultation and perfected treatments.

A numbing solution is used during the procedure to ensure you remain as comfortable as possible. The 2-2.5 hour appointment is extremely interactive to help keep your nerves at rest.
You will have access to a mirror throughout the entire appointment to check in and watch whenever you would like.
Healing is a simple process. There is no scabbing, no need to hide, no need take time off work; there is really no down time at all! Most clients leave the appointment with no redness. The numbing solution used during the appointment helps to control any swelling or redness which means you can continue your day with no funny looks or questions. Clients even come on their lunch hour and return to work directly after the appointment.
We send clients home with a moisturizing ointment to apply throughout the following 10 days.
Your results will vary depending on skin type, lifestyle and the immediate and long-term aftercare. Once healed (after 4 weeks), the color will reduce by 30-50 percent. Patchiness or lightness can be perfected during your second session.
